Kinds of the Noun (संज्ञा के भेद)
Noun के पाँच भेद हैं —
1. Proper Noun (व्यक्तिवाचक संज्ञा)
2. Common Noun (जातिवाचक संज्ञा)
3. Collective Noun (समूहवाचक संज्ञा)
4. Material Noun (द्रव्यवाचक संज्ञा)
5. Abstract Noun (भाववाचक संज्ञा)
1. Proper Noun: किसी व्यक्ति, जानवर, स्थान या वस्तु के खास नाम को Proper Noun कहते हैं।
A proper noun is the name of a particular person, animal, place or thing; as,
Ram, Sita, Patna, Tom, India, Ganga, March, May, Sunday, etc.
2. Common Noun: जिस Noun से किसी खास व्यक्ति, जानवर, स्थान या वस्तु का बोध न होकर पूरी जाति या श्रेणी का बोध होता है, उसे Common Noun कहते हैं।
A common noun is a name given in common to every person or thing of the same class or kind; as,
boy, girl, man, woman, cow, dog, cat, pen, book, ball, table, school, village, capital, river, day, etc.
Note: Sita, Geeta, और Mala से खास लड़कियों का बोध होता है, अतः ये Proper Nouns हैं। परंतु girl कहने से किसी खास लड़की का बोध न होकर किसी भी लड़की का बोध होता है। अतः girl एक Common Noun है।

3. Collective Noun: जिस Noun से एक ही तरह के व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं के समूह का बोध होता है, उसे Collective Noun कहते हैं।
A collective noun is the name of a number of persons or things taken together and spoken of as one whole; as,
Class (वर्ग), team (दल), flock (झुंड), crowd (भीड़), family (परिवार), committee (समिति), army (सेना), bunch (गुच्छा), mob (भीड़)
'army' कहने से सैनिकों के समूह का बोध होता है। 'crowd' कहने से लोगों के समूह का बोध होता है। इसी प्रकार ऊपर के अन्य शब्द समूह का बोध कराते हैं। अतः वे Collective Nouns हैं।
4. Material Noun: जिस Noun से किसी द्रव्य या पदार्थ का बोध होता है, जिसे मापा या तौला जाता है, किन्तु गिना नहीं जाता है, उसे Material Noun कहते हैं।

water(पानी), milk (दूध), oil (तेल), ghee (घी), butter (मक्खन), ink (स्याही), tea (चाय), coffee (काँफी)
wheat (गेहूँ), flour (आटा), bread (रोटी), pulse (दाल), rice (चावल), meat (मांस), sugar (चीनी), paddy (धान), wood (लकड़ी), gold (सोना), silver (चाँदी), iron (लोहा), brass (पीतल), wool (ऊन), paper (कागज), sand (बालू),
Note 1. wood Material Noun है, परंतु इससे निर्मित chair, table, bench, desk, इत्यादि Common Noun हैं।
Note 2. Bread भी Material Noun है।
Note 3. Paper Material Noun है, परंतु book Common Noun है।
5. Abstract Noun : जिस Noun को देखा या छुआ नहीं जा सकता है, सिर्फ अनुभव किया जा सकता है, उसे Abstract Noun कहते हैं।
